Panis, panis is a third declension masculine, and the nominative and genitive singular are identical - only the sentence tells you which you have. It is a countable loaf as well as bread in the mass, so panes in the plural means loaves, as in the five of the miracle.

This corpus is soaked in the liturgical sense: panis vitae, panis angelorum, panem nostrum cotidianum from the Lord's Prayer. Read it plainly first and theologically second. The descendants are everywhere: French pain, Spanish pan, Italian pane, and in English the buried ones - company and companion, from cum panis, those you share bread with, plus pantry and pannier.
