paulus

Paulus, paula, paulum is a regular first and second declension adjective, but you will rarely meet it agreeing with a noun. It survives mostly in two frozen case forms: the neuter accusative paulum, "a little, a bit", and the ablative paulo, "by a little", which is why paulo post and paulo ante mean "a little afterwards" and "a little before". That ablative is the ablative of degree of difference, so it also props up comparatives: paulo maior, paulo melior.

The obvious trap is the name. Paulus is also the commonest of Roman cognomina and the apostle Paul, so in an ecclesiastical text a capitalised Paulus is a person roughly always, not a size.
