Praedico, praedicere, praedixi, praedictum is prae plus dico, third conjugation, and it means "say in advance" - either warn beforehand or prophesy. The participle praedictus, "aforesaid", is the workhorse of charters and legal Latin, where every second noun has already been named once.
The trap is a genuine homograph. There is a second verb praedico, praedicare, praedicavi, praedicatum, first conjugation, from prae plus dico, dicare, and it means "proclaim publicly, praise" - and in Christian Latin "preach". Predicate, predicament and "preach" itself come from that one; predict comes from this one. The present tenses part company at once (praedicit against praedicat), but the imperative praedic and the infinitives are close enough to catch you out.
