qualiter

Qualiter is the adverb of qualis, "of what kind", and means "how, in what manner". Classical prose prefers quomodo or a plain ut and leaves qualiter to later writers. This corpus is late and ecclesiastical, so it turns up constantly - and above all as a chapter heading. Qualiter fratres dormiant, "how the brothers are to sleep", is exactly the kind of rubric the Benedictine Rule is built out of, and a monastic customary can run to a hundred of them.

In an indirect question it takes the subjunctive, as any interrogative word does. Its formal correlative is taliter, "in such a way", though in practice sic does that job and taliter is rare enough to look affected.
