Sacerdos, sacerdotis, third declension and of common gender: the same word serves for priest and priestess, and only the adjective tells you which, so sacerdos magna is a priestess. That is worth noticing in a language usually so keen on separate feminine forms.

The compound is sacer plus the root of do or facio, "one who performs the sacred act". Republican Rome had no single clergy but overlapping colleges - pontifices, augures, flamines, the Vestals - with the pontifex maximus at the top, and a sacerdos was often a magistrate doing a second job rather than a professional. Church Latin narrows the word to the ordained priest and keeps summus sacerdos for the high priest of the Old Testament. English sacerdotal.
