Secundus, secunda, secundum is first and second declension, and it is the future participle of sequor with the deponent meaning kept: "following". Everything else falls out of that. Second in order is the one following the first. Favourable is the wind or current that goes your way, so secundo flumine is downstream and vento secundo is with a fair wind. Res secundae, literally following circumstances, is prosperity, and its opposite res adversae is the things coming at you.

The preposition secundum, "along, next to, according to", is the same word again. Note the competition with alter, which means the second of exactly two and is preferred when only a pair is in play.
