similiter

Similiter is the adverb of similis, formed with the -iter ending that third declension adjectives take: fortis gives fortiter, gravis gives graviter, similis gives similiter. It governs nothing on its own; the thing compared is attached with atque, ac or ut, or left to the reader.

Liturgy and canon law lean on it as a stock connective. Similiter et calicem, "in like manner the chalice", is Paul at 1 Corinthians 11:25 in the Vulgate, and a medieval rule-book will string clauses together with similiter for pages at a stretch rather than repeat the whole provision. It is duller than pariter, which suggests equal footing, and vaguer than item, which simply lists. English gets similar, assimilate, simulate and simultaneous from the same root.
