societas

Societas, societatis is third declension feminine, built on socius with the abstract suffix -tas that also gives civitas and veritas. It covers any joining together: an alliance between states, a commercial partnership, or fellowship in the widest moral sense.

The person joined with goes into cum with the ablative, the thing shared into the genitive: societas belli, a partnership in war. Christian writers use it for communion, and the Jesuits are the Societas Iesu. Do not read the modern sense back into it: English society drifted towards "people in general", which the Latin never means on its own - for that Cicero says homines or civitas.
