Socius, socii, m., second declension, with the older contracted genitive singular soci sitting beside the full socii throughout the corpus. It also works as an adjective, socius, socia, socium, "allied, shared".
In Roman history the socii are a specific group: the Italian communities bound to Rome by treaty but denied citizenship. The war they fought in 91 BC to get it is the bellum sociale, translated as the Social War, which has nothing to do with sociability and confuses every reader once. The root is probably sequor, "follow", so a socius is one who goes along with you. From it: societas, "partnership", and English society, social, associate, and at a distance sociology.
