Somnus, somni, m. Second declension. It is the state of sleeping, not the thing you see while asleep: that is somnium, a neuter, and the two are worth keeping apart because English "dream" is never somnus.
The idiom is somnum capere, to take sleep, rather than to have it. Poets personify Somnus as the god of sleep and make him the brother of Mors, which is where the constant pairing of sleep and death in Latin verse comes from. Beside somnus sits sopor, heavier and often drugged or unnatural. The family gives somnolent, insomnia, which is literally sleeplessness from in- plus somnus, and somnambulist, the person who walks while in it.
