Sonus, soni is second declension masculine, from sono, sonare, "I make a noise". Beside it sits sonitus, sonitus, a fourth declension noun from the same verb, and the pair are close enough that writers use them almost interchangeably. If you want a rule of thumb: sonus is the sound as a thing with a quality, sonitus the sound as an event, a crash or a din. Do not expect authors to be consistent about it.

The word also does duty as a technical term. In grammar and rhetoric sonus is the sound of a letter or the tone of a phrase, and in later music theory it is a note. English sound came through French from sonus, and sonorous, resonate, sonata and consonant all belong to the same family. Do not confuse the ablative sono with the first person verb sono, "I sound".
