specto

Specto, spectare, spectavi, spectatum is first conjugation and entirely regular, which makes it a good verb to drill endings on. It is the frequentative of specio, "I catch sight of", so the built-in sense is looking repeatedly or at length: watching rather than glancing. That is why it is the verb for spectators at the games, and why spectaculum is a show.

Two extensions matter. Of buildings and coastlines it means "face towards", ad orientem spectat. Of business it means "have a bearing on", ad me spectat, "it is my affair". Both take ad with the accusative. The family is enormous: aspicio, conspicio, expecto, suspicio, respicio, and through them English inspect, respect, suspect, spectacle and species.
