Superior, superius. The comparative of superus, upper, and it declines as a third-declension comparative: superior for masculine and feminine, superius for the neuter, genitive superioris, ablative superiore. Its superlatives are summus and supremus, and those two differ, summus being the topmost and supremus the last.

Hold two senses apart. In space it is higher, and de loco superiore is the standard phrase for a commander's advantage of ground. In time it is earlier, so superiore anno means last year rather than a better one. The English sense "better in rank" is only one branch of the third meaning, and reading it into every superior turns a hillside in Caesar into a value judgement.
