Superus, supera, superum, from the preposition super. The positive is rare and mostly poetic; what you actually meet is the rest of the family, and it is unusually crowded. The comparative is superior, superius, "higher, earlier, superior", and there are two superlatives that split the work: supremus, "last, final, highest in rank", and summus, "topmost".

Masculine plural superi means the gods above, set against inferi, the dead below, and mare superum is the Adriatic against mare inferum, the Tyrrhenian. In prose the neuter comparative superius commonly means "earlier in this text, above", which is how it appears in most of the medieval material here. English superior, supreme, sum, summit and (through French) sovereign.
