talis

Talis, talis, tale is a two-termination third-declension adjective: masculine and feminine share every form, and only the neuter differs. Ablative singular tali, genitive plural talium, neuter plural talia.

It is a correlative and lives in a pair. Qualis asks or introduces, talis answers: qualis... talis, "of what sort... of that sort". It also sets up a result clause with ut and the subjunctive, talis erat ut omnes eum amarent, "he was such that everyone loved him". The trap is the line between talis and tantus. Talis is about kind and quality, tantus about size and amount; English "such" cheerfully does both jobs and Latin will not. In this corpus talia as a bare neuter plural, "such things", is very common. Italian tale and French tel keep it; English took nothing directly, but "quality" comes from its partner qualis.
