tantus

Tantus, tanta, tantum declines like bonus and works as a correlative with quantus: quantus... tantus, "as great... so great". It very often sets up a result clause with ut and the subjunctive, which is the pattern in the first example above.

Two cases have hardened into idiom. The genitive tanti is price and value: tanti est, "it is worth it"; tanti emit, "he bought it for so much". The ablative tanto is measure of difference with a comparative: tanto melior, "so much the better", tanto magis, "all the more". The trap is the neuter tantum, which has become an adverb meaning "only" and ranks in the top hundred in its own right, so tantum dixit is "he only said", not "he said so much". Keep tantus (size) apart from talis (kind) and tot (number). Italian and Spanish both keep tanto.
