tot is INDECLINABLE. One form covers every gender, case and number, so tot naves, tot annos and tot hominum all use the same three letters and you take the case from the noun. That makes it easy to write and easy to miss when parsing.

It answers quot, "how many", and the pair works exactly as tantus/quantus does for size: tot ... quot is "as many as". Terence's proverb quot homines, tot sententiae is the standard illustration, and it is worth learning in that shape rather than the loose tot homines version people usually quote. Do not stretch tot to cover degree, which is tam, or the amount of a mass, which is tantum. Its derived adjective totidem means "just as many".
