Tantum is the neuter accusative of tantus, so great, pressed into service as an adverb, and it carries two senses a learner has to keep apart. Meaning so much or so far it answers quantity, and it often looks forward to quantum or to a result clause with ut. Meaning only it sits right beside the word it limits, and it gives the common pairing non tantum ... sed etiam, not only ... but also.
