Magis is the comparative adverb more, and whatever it is measured against follows quam. Latin usually prefers a one-word comparative such as fortius or celerius, so magis is kept for comparing whole ideas, for setting one thing against another, and for adjectives ending in -eus, -ius or -uus, where magis idoneus stands in for a form the language will not build. It is the ancestor of Spanish mas and French mais.
