Bene is the adverb of bonus, and like its English counterpart well it does not look like the adjective it belongs to. Its comparative and superlative go their own way too, melius and optime, so the three are best learnt as one set rather than derived. Watch for bene habere, which is idiomatic rather than literal and means to be in a good way, and for the prefix in benefactor, benevolent and benefit.
