Virgo, virginis, f., third declension, stem virgin-. Feminine, and it has no masculine partner: for an unmarried young man Latin says adulescens or iuvenis.

In classical usage the word means an unmarried young woman of good family. The sexual sense is present but is not the whole point, which is why the Vestal virgines, the aqueduct Aqua Virgo and the constellation Virgo can all carry the name without strain. Christian writers narrowed it hard and gave it a capital letter, so in this corpus Virgo on its own usually means one particular person and the translation "virgin" is safe. Elsewhere "maiden" or "girl" is closer. English took virgin and virginal from it, and the place name Virginia.
