Ch 28 · Lesson 19

A formal message

Writing to someone you would not call by their first name, by email or WeChat.

Why these go together

A formal email opens with (zūnjìng de), respected, before the name and title, the way English opens with Dear. On WeChat, even at work, a short reply such as (shōudào), received, is normal and polite.

  • :

    Dear Teacher Li,

    Literally: respected teacher Li

  • 。

Please let me know as soon as you can.

  • !

Wishing you every success in your work.

Literally: wish your work goes smoothly

  • ,!

    Hello, Mr Wang.

  • ,!

    Received, thank you!

  • ?

    When would suit you?

    Literally: when are you convenient

  • 。

Get in touch any time if you have questions.
