知道 or 认识?

The same split Spanish and French make, in a third language.

The rule

知道 (zhi1-dao4) is knowing a FACT. ren4-shi0 认识 is being acquainted with a PERSON or a place, having met them. Exactly the split Spanish makes with saber and conocer, and French with savoir and connaitre.
