Mandarin Verb Reduplication: 看看, 看一看, 休息休息 and the 一下 Alternative

What doubling a verb actually means

Reduplication does not change what the verb denotes. 看 (kàn) and 看看 (kàn kan) are both looking. What changes is the SIZE of the event, and everything else follows from that.

A reduplicated verb is:

  • brief - it takes a moment, not an afternoon
  • tentative - a go, an attempt, not a commitment
  • casual - the register drops, the sentence relaxes
  • low-cost to the listener - which is why it softens a request

Compare:

  • 看这本书 (kàn zhè běn shū)。 - Read this book. An instruction.
  • 看看这本书 (kàn kan zhè běn shū)。 - Have a look at this book. An invitation.
  • 你说 (nǐ shuō)。 - Speak. Blunt to the point of rude.
  • 你说说 (nǐ shuō shuo)。 - Tell us about it. Warm.

That last pair is the reason this matters. Mandarin has no modal politeness machinery - no 'could you possibly', no conditional. Softening is done with particles, with 请 (qǐng), and above all with this. If your requests sound abrupt in Mandarin, reduplication is almost always the missing piece.

The three shapes for a one-syllable verb

PatternExampleReadingSense
AA (kàn kan)kàn kanhave a look
A A (kàn yi kàn)kàn yi kànhave a quick look, a bit softer
A A (kàn le kàn)kàn le kànhad a look (completed, past)

AA is the workhorse. A 一 A is the same thing with a fraction more room in it, and it is slightly more common in speech than in writing. A 了 A is the past: use it in narrative, where the glance already happened.

  • 吧 (nǐ kàn kan ba)。 - Have a look.
  • 就走 (wǒ kàn yi kàn jiù zǒu)。 - I'll have a quick look and then go.
  • 我,什么也没说 (tā kàn le kàn wǒ, shén me yě méi shuō)。 - He glanced at me and said nothing.

Everyday one-syllable set forms you should simply own:

  • (shì shi) - have a go
  • (xiǎng xiang) - have a think
  • (děng deng) - hang on a moment
  • (shuō shuo) - tell us
  • (zǒu zou) - go for a walk
  • (wèn wen) - ask around
  • (xǐ xi) - give it a wash

The second copy is neutral tone

This is the pronunciation rule, and it is the one that makes a reduplicated verb sound native rather than merely correct.

The second copy loses its tone. 看 (kàn) is fourth tone; 看看 is kàn kan, not kàn kàn. The same everywhere: 试试 (shì shi), 想想 (xiǎng xiang), 等等 (děng deng), 说说 (shuō shuo).

In the A 一 A pattern, both the 一 and the second copy go light: 看一看 is kàn yi kàn with the 一 unstressed, and in fast speech it nearly disappears.

For two-syllable verbs, the SECOND pair carries the reduction: 休息休息 (xiū xi xiū xi), 讨论讨论 (tǎo lùn tǎo lùn) - the third and fourth syllables are said lighter and faster than the first two. Dictionaries still print the tones, so this is something you have to hear rather than read.

Two-syllable verbs: ABAB, never AABB

A two-syllable verb repeats as a whole word. 休息 (xiū xi) becomes 休息休息 (xiū xi xiū xi). This is the pattern learners get wrong most often, because Mandarin has a rival shape that looks similar and belongs to a different word class.

  • Verbs: ABAB. 休息休息 (xiū xi xiū xi), 讨论讨论 (tǎo lùn tǎo lùn), 商量商量 (shāng liang shāng liang), 研究研究 (yán jiū yán jiū), 打扫打扫 (dǎ sǎo dǎ sǎo), 认识认识 (rèn shi rèn shi).
  • Adjectives: AABB. 高高兴兴 (gāo gāo xìng xìng), 干干净净 (gān gān jìng jìng), 清清楚楚 (qīng qīng chǔ chǔ).

休休息息 is not a word. 干净干净 is not a word either. The two shapes do not cross over, and knowing which class a word belongs to is the whole of the decision. If it can take 很 (hěn), it is an adjective and it goes AABB; if it can take an object, it is a verb and it goes ABAB. The adjective side of this, and the four-syllable rhythm it shares with idioms, is covered in four-character idioms.

Note also that the A 一 A insert does NOT extend to two-syllable verbs. 休息一休息 is wrong. If you want that extra softness on a two-syllable verb, use 一下 (yí xià): 休息一下 (xiū xi yí xià).

Verb-object compounds are the exception that proves the rule. Words like 聊天 (liáo tiān), 帮忙 (bāng máng) and 散步 (sàn bù) look like two-syllable verbs but are really a verb plus its own object. Only the verb half doubles, and the object stays put:

  • 聊天 (liáo tiān) becomes (liáo liao tiān), not 聊天聊天.
  • 帮忙 (bāng máng) becomes (bāng bang máng).
  • 散步 (sàn bù) becomes sànsàn (sàn san bù).

If you are unsure whether a word is one of these, check whether 了 (le) can go in the middle: 聊了天 (liáo le tiān) is fine, so 聊天 splits, so it reduplicates as 聊聊天.

一下 (yí xià): the near-synonym

一下 (yí xià) literally means 'one stroke', and in practice it means 'a bit', 'briefly', 'once'. It attaches after the verb and does almost the same softening job:

  • 看一下 (kàn yí xià) - have a look.
  • 等一下 (děng yí xià) - wait a moment.
  • 介绍一下 (jiè shào yí xià) - let me briefly introduce.

So when does each win?

Use (yí xià) when:

  • the verb is two syllables and formal-ish: 介绍一下 (jiè shào yí xià) is far more natural than 介绍介绍 (jiè shào jiè shào) in a meeting.
  • you are speaking to a stranger: 请等一下 (qǐng děng yí xià) is the neutral public register.
  • the verb already carries a lot of material after it and a second copy would clutter the clause.

Use reduplication when:

  • the tone is warm and personal: 你说说 (nǐ shuō shuo) invites, 你说一下 (nǐ shuō yí xià) instructs.
  • you want 'have a go at it' rather than 'do it once': 试试 (shì shi) is an offer, 试一下 (shì yí xià) is closer to a direction.
  • you are narrating in the past, where 看了看 (kàn le kàn) does something 一下 cannot do as neatly.

They also combine with the A 一 A pattern in the middle: 看一看 (kàn yi kàn) sits between 看看 (kàn kan) and 看一下 (kàn yí xià) in both length and formality. In practice, learners who default to 一下 (yí xià) for everything sound correct and slightly flat; adding reduplication to the mix is what makes requests sound friendly.

What reduplication cannot do

The restrictions all come from the same source: a reduplicated verb is a small, unmeasured, unfinished event. Anything that contradicts that is out.

1. Verbs of state do not reduplicate. 是 (shì), 有 (yǒu), 在 (zài), 知道 (zhī dào), 爱 (ài), 像 (xiàng) describe a condition, not an activity, so there is nothing to do briefly. 知道知道 (zhī dào zhī dào) and 是是 (shì shi) are not sentences. (认识 (rèn shi) is a borderline case worth knowing: 认识认识 (rèn shi rèn shi) is fine when it means 'get acquainted', which is an activity, and impossible when it means 'know'.)

2. A completed and quantified action does not reduplicate. Once you have said how much of something happened, the event is measured, and reduplication insists it is not. 我看看了三本书 (wǒ kàn kan le sān běn shū) is wrong; 我看了三本书 (wǒ kàn le sān běn shū) is what you want. The same applies to a frequency: 我看看了两次 (wǒ kàn kan le liǎng cì) is wrong.

3. No (le) after the reduplication. The 了 goes INSIDE, between the copies: 看了看 (kàn le kàn), not 看看了 (kàn kan le). And a two-syllable verb has no slot for it at all, so 我昨天休息休息了 (wǒ zuó tiān xiū xi xiū xi le) is wrong; say 我昨天休息了一下 (wǒ zuó tiān xiū xi le yí xià).

4. No complement after the reduplication. A resultative or directional complement says the action reached an endpoint, which is the opposite of tentative. 看看完 (kàn kan wán) is wrong. Pick one: 看完 (kàn wán) if it finished, 看看 (kàn kan) if it was a glance.

5. No (zhe), and no ongoing reading. 在看看 (zài kàn kan) is wrong, because a brief go cannot also be in progress.

6. Not with (guò). 看看过 (kàn kan guò) is wrong for the same reason as the complements: 过 reports a completed experience.

Worked examples

  1. 我们吧 (wǒ men xiū xi xiū xi ba)。 - Let's take a break. ABAB on a two-syllable verb, with 吧 doubling the softness.
  2. 这本书 (nǐ kàn kan zhè běn shū)。 - Have a look at this book. AA; the object follows the whole reduplication.
  3. 我,什么也没说 (tā kàn le kàn wǒ, shén me yě méi shuō)。 - He glanced at me and said nothing. A 了 A: the past-narrative shape.
  4. 让我 (ràng wǒ xiǎng xiang)。 - Let me think about it. A set form; the second 想 is neutral tone.
  5. 我们吧 (wǒ men liáo liao tiān ba)。 - Let's have a chat. Verb-object compound: only 聊 doubles, 天 stays put.
  6. 请你你自己 (qǐng nǐ jiè shào yí xià nǐ zì jǐ)。 - Please introduce yourself briefly. 一下 wins here: two-syllable verb, semi-formal setting.

Common mistakes

  1. AABB on a verb. 休休息息 (xiū xiū xi xi) and 讨讨论论 (tǎo tǎo lùn lùn) are the classic error. Verbs go ABAB; AABB belongs to adjectives.
  2. Tones on the second copy. Saying kàn kàn instead of kàn kan is understandable but immediately marks you out. The second copy is light.
  3. (le) in the wrong place. It goes between the copies, never after them: 看了看 (kàn le kàn), not 看看了 (kàn kan le). With two-syllable verbs, use 一下 (yí xià) and put 了 before it.
  4. Reduplicating a state. 我知道知道 (wǒ zhī dào zhī dào) and 我有有时间 (wǒ yǒu yǒu shí jiān) are not softer, they are ungrammatical. Only activities can be done briefly.
  5. Splitting the object out of a verb-object compound. 聊天聊天 (liáo tiān liáo tiān) and 帮忙帮忙 (bāng máng bāng máng) are wrong. Double the verb half only: 聊聊天 (liáo liao tiān), 帮帮忙 (bāng bang máng).
  6. Adding a complement or a count. 看看完 (kàn kan wán), 我看看了三本书 (wǒ kàn kan le sān běn shū) and 看看两次 (kàn kan liǎng cì) all fail for one reason: reduplication says the event is small and unmeasured, and each of these measures it.

Register: when NOT to soften

Reduplication is friendly, and friendliness is not always what you want. It belongs in requests, offers, suggestions and casual narration. It does not belong in:

  • instructions that must be obeyed - a safety notice does not say 看看 (kàn kan), it says 请注意 (qǐng zhù yì).
  • formal written prose - reports and essays use the plain verb; the tentativeness reads as vagueness on the page.
  • anything where precision is the point - 检查检查 (jiǎn chá jiǎn chá) invites a quick once-over, which is the wrong instruction for an inspection.

The flip side is that under-using it is the more common learner problem by a wide margin. If a Mandarin speaker keeps sounding slightly warmer than you do in the same situation, count the doubled verbs in what they said.

  • Four-character idioms - the AABB adjective shape that is NOT this pattern, and the four-syllable rhythm both belong to.
  • Verb-object verbs - why 聊天 (liáo tiān) and 帮忙 (bāng máng) split down the middle, and how to spot the next one.
  • Aspect markers - the 了 (le), 着 (zhe) and 过 (guò) that reduplication mostly refuses to share a verb with.
  • Rhetorical questions - the other side of tone control: how to sharpen a sentence, once you can soften one.

Practise: test yourself

Fill in the blank

0/8

Complete the reduplication. Some gaps want the second copy of the verb, some want the 一 or 了 that goes between the copies, and one wants 一下.

  1. 我去外面走 (the second copy, said in the neutral tone)

wǒ qù wài miàn zǒu ___。

  2. 我们休息吧。 (two-syllable verb: repeat the whole word)

wǒ men xiū xi ___ ba 。

  3. 这个问题我们讨论 (two-syllable verb: repeat the whole word)

zhè ge wèn tí wǒ men tǎo lùn ___。

  4. 你先试试,不行再说。 (the marker that sits between the two copies)

nǐ xiān shì ___ shì , bù xíng zài shuō 。

  5. 他看看我,什么也没说。 (the past version of the same slot)

tā kàn ___ kàn wǒ , shén me yě méi shuō 。

  6. 请等 (the near-synonym that attaches to any verb)

    qǐng děng ___。

  7. 让我想 (the second copy, said in the neutral tone)

    ràng wǒ xiǎng ___。

  8. 这件事我们应该商量 (two-syllable verb: repeat the whole word)

zhè jiàn shì wǒ men yīng gāi shāng liáng ___。

Pick the right one

0/8

Pick the form that is actually Mandarin. Verbs double as ABAB; only adjectives go AABB; and a verb-object compound doubles its verb half alone.

    Let's have a rest: wǒ men ___ ba 。

  2. Let's talk it over: 我们这个问题。

Let's talk it over: wǒ men ___ zhè ge wèn tí 。

  3. Give the room a quick tidy: 你房间。

Give the room a quick tidy: nǐ ___ fáng jiān 。

  4. The room is spotless (adjective, not verb): 房间的。

The room is spotless (adjective, not verb): fáng jiān ___ de 。

  5. He glanced at me: 他我。

He glanced at me: tā ___ wǒ 。

  6. Give it a go: 你

Give it a go: nǐ ___。

  7. Please wait a moment: 请

  8. Let's have a chat: 我们吧。

    Let's have a chat: wǒ men ___ ba 。
