冰箱(bīng xiāng) - fridge, refrigerator in Mandarin

冰箱 (bīngxiāng) is the fridge. Break it apart and it says exactly what it is: 冰 (bīng) is "ice" and 箱 (xiāng) is "box, case", so a fridge is literally an "ice box". The compound is completely transparent, which makes it one of the easier household nouns to hold onto.

You will hear it constantly in kitchen and shopping talk: 把...放进冰箱 (bǎ...fàng jìn bīngxiāng), "put... in the fridge", and 冰箱坏了 (bīngxiāng huài le), "the fridge is broken", a genuinely common complaint in any household. The measure word is 台 (tái), the one used for machines and appliances, so "one fridge" is 一台冰箱 (yì tái bīngxiāng), not 一个冰箱.

Do not confuse it with 冰柜 (bīngguì), the chest freezer, or with just 冰 (bīng) on its own, which means "ice" full stop. If you want to specify the freezer compartment inside a normal fridge, that is 冷冻室 (lěngdòngshì).
