出租车(chū zū chē) - taxi in Mandarin

出租车 (chūzūchē) is the mainland word for "taxi". 出租 (chūzū) means "to rent out, to hire out" and 车 (chē) is "vehicle", so it is literally a "hire-out car", a car you rent for the length of a journey rather than owning.

Hailing one: 叫出租车 (jiào chūzūchē), "to call a taxi", or nowadays more often 打车 (dǎchē), "to hail a cab" (also used for booking one through an app). The driver is addressed politely as 师傅 (shīfu), not by the more formal 司机 (sījī), which is the neutral word for "driver" in general.

Taiwan and Hong Kong tend to use 计程车 (jìchéngchē) or 的士 (díshì) instead, the latter a Cantonese loan from English "taxi" that has spread into spoken Mandarin too, especially in the shortened form 打的 (dǎdī), "to grab a taxi".
