打击(dǎ jī) - to strike, to hit; a blow, a setback; to crack down on in Mandarin

打击 (dǎ jī) is a strike or a blow, and by extension a setback. As a verb it takes two very different objects. Point it at a crime, a rumour or smuggling and it means crack down on. Point it at a person or their confidence and it means knock, demoralise, undermine.

The noun use is the one you will hear most in conversation: 对他打击很大 means it hit him hard. Chinese puts the thing hurt after 对 and leaves 打击 sitting as a noun with 很大 attached, which feels back to front if you are translating word by word.

The trap is physical violence. 打击 almost never describes one person punching another in ordinary speech, even though the characters say hit and strike. For that you want 打 or 揍. 打击 lives in newspapers, official notices and emotional descriptions, not in a fight.
