打架 is a physical fight between people: fists, shoving, a playground scrap or a pub brawl. It is not war (打仗) and not a verbal row (吵架), though the two rhyme neatly and are worth learning as a pair. 吵架 is shouting; 打架 is hitting.

Because it is a verb-object compound, the two halves can be prised apart. You cannot say 打架他; you say 和他打架 or 跟他打架. Anything that looks like a direct object goes in front with 和 or 跟. Aspect and measure words go in the middle: 打了一架, 打过架.

Nobody uses 打架 for a formal or sporting fight. A boxing match is 比赛, and soldiers in combat are 打仗 or 战斗. 打架 stays disorderly and unofficial.
