大麻 (dàmá) covers both halves of what English splits between hemp and cannabis. The rope, the cloth and the drug are all 大麻, and only the context tells you which one is meant.
In news reports and police stories it means the drug, and it sits in the same sentences as 毒品 and 违法. In a shop selling bags or rope it simply means the fibre.
The trap is reaching for it as a translation of weed in a casual chat. 大麻 is the plain clinical term, closer to cannabis than to any slang, and Chinese slang for the drug varies far too much by place to guess at.
