呆 (dāi) has two related senses. As a verb meaning to stay it is the colloquial equivalent of 待 (dāi/dài) and describes spending time in a place (呆在家, stay at home; 呆了三天, stayed for three days). As an adjective it means dull, blank, or stupid-looking: 呆呆的 (looking blank or dazed), 发呆 (fā dāi, to be in a daze). Reduplication 呆呆地 is used adverbially (呆呆地站着, standing there blankly).
