当地(dāng dì) - local, of that place; the locality in Mandarin

当地 (dāng dì) means local to the place under discussion. It is the word travel writing and news reporting run on: 当地人, 当地时间, 当地政府, 当地的风俗.

Its meaning is anchored to the topic, not to the speaker. Writing about Chengdu, 当地的小吃 means Chengdu's snacks, wherever the writer happens to be sitting. It pairs neatly with 当时, which does the same trick with time: that place and that moment.

The trap is using it for where you are now. If you are standing in the town and want to talk about its shops, say 这里的商店 or 本地的商店; 当地 in that position sounds like you are reporting on yourself from a distance. And it needs 的 before an ordinary noun, so 当地的天气 rather than 当地天气, except in set journalistic phrases such as 当地时间.
