电梯(diàn tī) - lift, elevator in Mandarin

电梯 (diàn tī) is a lift. The verb that goes with it is 坐, the same verb used for buses and trains, so you 坐电梯 rather than take it or ride it. Its measure word is 部 or 台.

The 梯 element is worth collecting, because it gives you a small family for free: 楼梯 is a staircase, 扶梯 or 自动扶梯 is an escalator, and 梯子 is the ladder you actually climb. If a building has both, Chinese distinguishes them by asking 坐电梯还是走楼梯.

The English-speaker trap is that 电梯 in everyday mainland speech often covers escalators too, so 电梯 on a shopping centre sign may not mean a lift at all. The other snag is the verb: saying 拿电梯 for "take the lift" is a direct translation that no one says.
