范围(fàn wéi) - scope, range, extent in Mandarin

范围 (fàn wéi) is the abstract boundary of something: the scope of a job, the range of a search, the extent of an investigation. It is not a physical fence, it is where a thing stops applying.

It almost always takes 内 or 之内 when you want "within": 在范围内 (zài fàn wéi nèi), and 超出范围 (chāo chū fàn wéi) for anything that goes beyond it. Learn the whole frame rather than the bare noun, because 范围 on its own rarely does the work.

The trap for English speakers is reaching for 范围 when you mean a physical area. A car park, a field or a room is 地方 (dì fāng) or 区域 (qū yù). 范围 is what a rule, a duty or a search covers, not the ground you can walk on.
