付出 (fùchū) is what you give up to get something: effort, time, money, love, a price. It is the giving side of a trade, and the sentence usually implies a cost that was felt.

The commonest collocations are 付出代价 (fùchū dàijià, to pay a price), 付出努力 (fùchū nǔlì, to put in effort) and 付出感情 (fùchū gǎnqíng, to invest emotionally).

The trap is using it for paying a bill. That is 付钱 (fù qián) or just 付 (fù). 付出 is figurative: you 付出 your youth for a career, you do not 付出 for a coffee.
