搞错(gǎo cuò) - to get wrong, to mix up, to be mistaken in Mandarin

搞错 (gǎo cuò) is the everyday way to say somebody has got something wrong: a name, a date, a room number, a bill. It is a resultative verb, so 错 reports the outcome of the action rather than describing the action, and the pair almost always carries 了 once the mistake has happened.

Word order matters. Either the object follows the whole compound, 搞错了名字, or it moves in front with 把, as in 把名字搞错了. Both are natural. To deny the mistake, negate with 没: 我没搞错.

The trap is tone rather than grammar. 搞 is colloquial and a little blunt, so 你搞错了 aimed at a stranger or a superior can land as brusque. The neutral swap is 弄错, and the polite version is closer to 可能是我弄错了, where you take the blame yourself.
