The standpoint of this article is very clear.
观点 (guān diǎn) is a point of view: the position someone argues from in a discussion, an essay or a debate. It is a slightly formal word and belongs to writing, meetings and argument rather than chat.
The pattern 从...的观点来看 (looking at it from the point of view of...) is worth learning whole. So is 持不同观点, to hold a different view, which turns up in anything written about disagreement.
The trap is that English opinion maps onto three Mandarin words. 意见 is what you think should be done, and it also means a complaint. 看法 is your everyday take on something. 观点 is a reasoned position. Ask a friend for their 观点 on lunch and you sound like you are chairing a committee.
