喝醉(hē zuì) - to get drunk, to be drunk in Mandarin

喝醉 (hē zuì) is a resultative verb: 喝 is the action, 醉 is what the action ends in. That structure is why it almost always turns up with 了 attached, 喝醉了, marking the change of state rather than a habit.

The trap for an English speaker is that "drunk" is an adjective in English but 喝醉 is a verb in Chinese. You do not say 他是喝醉 the way you say "he is drunk". You say 他喝醉了. If you want the pure adjective, 醉 on its own does that job.

Negation goes on the whole compound: 没喝醉 for did not get drunk, and 别喝醉 for do not get drunk. The infix form 喝不醉 means cannot get drunk, however much you put away, which is a compliment in some company and a warning in others.
