鸡蛋 (jīdàn) is the hen's egg, from 鸡 (jī, "chicken") plus 蛋 (dàn, "egg"). Bare 蛋 (dàn) can mean "egg" in general, but in everyday speech people specify the bird: 鸡蛋 (jīdàn) for a hen's egg, 鸭蛋 (yādàn) for a duck's egg.
It is a kitchen staple. 番茄炒鸡蛋 (fānqié chǎo jīdàn), "tomato and egg stir-fry", is one of the most-cooked home dishes in China, and 煮鸡蛋 (zhǔ jīdàn), "boiled egg", and 煎鸡蛋 (jiān jīdàn), "fried egg", cover most breakfast tables.
The measure word is 个 (gè): 一个鸡蛋 (yí gè jīdàn) is "one egg". Mind the tone on 蛋 (dàn), falling and firm, which an English speaker's ear can flatten if they treat it like the unstressed second syllable of an English compound noun.
