爵士(jué shì) - jazz, knight, Sir (title) in Mandarin

爵士 (jué shì) carries two meanings that have nothing to do with each other. The older one is the British knighthood: 爵士 (jué shì) translates Sir, as in 保罗爵士 (Bǎoluó jué shì), Sir Paul. The newer one is jazz, where the syllables were picked to echo the English word.

In practice the music sense is far more common, and you will usually see it as 爵士乐 (jué shì yuè), jazz music, with 乐 (yuè) making it unambiguous. 爵士歌手 (jué shì gē shǒu) is a jazz singer, 爵士乐队 (jué shì yuè duì) a jazz band.

Context settles which sense is meant, and the two almost never compete: one shows up beside instruments and bars, the other beside a surname. Do not read the music sense as having any noble flavour to it, because the phonetic borrowing came first and the characters were chosen for sound alone.
