咖啡厅(kā fēi tīng) - cafe in Mandarin

咖啡厅 (kāfēitīng) is a cafe, built by adding 厅 (tīng, "hall, large room") onto 咖啡 (kāfēi, "coffee"), a word Mandarin itself borrowed by sound from English. So the whole compound is essentially "coffee hall", a transparent, functional name for exactly what it describes.

咖啡厅 (kāfēitīng) and 咖啡馆 (kāfēiguǎn) are near enough interchangeable; both mean "cafe" and either will be understood, with 咖啡厅 (kāfēitīng) sounding slightly more like a chain or a spacious modern venue and 咖啡馆 (kāfēiguǎn) slightly more like an independent, cosier spot, though the line is not strict.

Cafe culture has grown fast in Chinese cities, and 咖啡厅 (kāfēitīng) now doubles as informal office space for students and freelancers, much as it does in Britain: ordering one drink and staying for hours with a laptop is entirely normal there too.
