类似 (lèi sì) is the written, slightly analytical word for similar. Its favourite shape is attributive: 类似的情况, 类似的问题, 类似的错误. Reports, complaints and instructions are full of it.
As a predicate it wants a comparison marked with 和 or 跟: 这两件事和上次很类似. To say similar to X directly, careful writing uses 类似于.
The trap is register. Everyday sameness is 一样, and identical is 相同. If a friend shows you two jumpers, 差不多一样 sounds human and 类似 sounds like a lab report.
