娜(nà) - a character used in women's names, graceful in Mandarin

娜 (nà) is not an ordinary word you can use in a sentence on its own. It is a name character, chosen for its sound and its 女 (nǚ) radical, and it appears almost exclusively in women's names.

It does most of its work in transliterated foreign names: 安娜 (Ān nà) Anna, 黛安娜 (Dài ān nà) Diana, 娜塔莎 (Nà tǎ shā) Natasha. It is equally common in Chinese given names, either alone as 娜 (Nà) or paired, as in 丽娜 (Lì nà) or 娜娜 (Nà nà).

There is a second reading, nuó, which survives in the literary phrase 婀娜 (ē nuó), meaning slender and graceful. That reading is rare and you will not need it in conversation, but it is why dictionaries list the character with a vaguely elegant gloss rather than none at all.
