荣誉 (róng yù) is public credit: the recognition a person, a team or an institution earns and can point at. It is the word on medals, certificates and the trophy cabinet, and 争取荣誉, to win honour, is what a coach says before a final.
It works as a modifier too, and there it lines up neatly with English "honorary": 荣誉会员 an honorary member, 荣誉学位 an honorary degree, 荣誉主席 an honorary chairman. As a plain noun it takes 获得 and 争取 rather than 做.
The trap is the moral half of English "honour". 荣誉 does not carry it. An honourable man, someone who keeps his word when it costs him, is 正直 or 有原则, not 有荣誉. And the polite "it is an honour to meet you" is 荣幸, a different word entirely: 很荣幸认识你. Reach for 荣誉 there and you will sound as though meeting someone has won you a prize.
