书房 (shūfáng) is a "study": 书 (shū) means "book" and 房 (fáng) means "room", so it reads literally as "book room". It is the room set aside for reading, writing and working quietly, distinct from a bedroom or lounge.
A traditional Chinese home might have a modest 书房 (shūfáng) with a desk, a 书架 (shūjià), "bookcase", and good light for reading; in modern flats it doubles as a home office.
Not every home has a dedicated 书房 (shūfáng); it is more common in larger houses, and its presence is sometimes treated as a mark of a family that values education.
