数据(shù jù) - data, figures in Mandarin

数据 (shù jù) is data in the modern technical sense: measurements, statistics, the contents of a database. It came into wide use with computing and it still smells of the office and the laboratory.

Chinese draws no singular and plural distinction here, so 数据 covers both "a datum" and "the data" and needs no article. Common partners are worth learning whole: 数据库 a database, 大数据 big data, 数据分析 data analysis, 移动数据 mobile data.

The trap is the neighbouring words. 数字 is a number or a digit, 资料 is material or reference documents, 信息 is information in the general sense. If you can count it and feed it to a spreadsheet, it is 数据; if it is a folder of background reading, it is 资料.
