水果(shuǐ guǒ) - fruit in Mandarin

水果 (shuǐguǒ) is fruit, built from 水 (shuǐ, "water") plus 果 (guǒ, "fruit, result"), so the compound reads as something like "watery fruit", a reasonable description of an apple next to a dry nut. Bare 果 (guǒ) can mean "fruit" or "result" depending on context; 水果 (shuǐguǒ) is the unambiguous everyday word for the thing you eat.

Third tone stacks on third tone here, shuǐguǒ, which is a genuine pronunciation trap: two third tones in a row trigger tone sandhi, so the first syllable actually surfaces closer to a second tone in natural speech, "shuí guǒ", even though the underlying tone and the pinyin spelling both stay third tone. Native speakers do this automatically; learners have to practise it deliberately.

水果 (shuǐguǒ) shows up constantly in polite offers and small talk: 吃水果吗 (chī shuǐguǒ ma), "would you like some fruit", is a common host's line after a meal, and 水果摊 (shuǐguǒ tān), "fruit stall", is a fixture of any Chinese street market.
