随 (suí) is the idea of going along with something: following a person, moving in step with a condition, or letting someone else decide. 随我来 is come with me; 随时间 is as time goes on; 随你 hands the choice over.

In modern speech it does most of its work inside compounds rather than alone: 随便 (as you like), 随时 (at any time), 随着 (along with, as), 随身 (on one's person), 随手 (in passing, without extra effort). Learning those five buys you most of the character's usefulness.

The trap is treating 随 as the ordinary verb for follow. That is 跟 or 跟着: 跟着我走 is what you say to a friend in a crowd. A bare 随 sounds set-phrase or literary, so keep it for the compounds and for fixed uses like 随你 and 随他去吧.
