退休 (tuì xiū) is to retire from working life. It is a verb, and it behaves like one: 他退休了 he has retired, 我明年退休 I retire next year, 快退休了 about to retire.

Because it is a verb, English nouns built on retire need rebuilding. My retirement becomes 我退休以后 after I retire, or 退休生活 retired life; a retirement age is 退休年龄 and a pension is 退休金. Learners regularly try 我的退休很好 and it lands wrong.

Do not stretch it to cover leaving a job in general. Quitting is 辞职, being let go is 被辞退, and a footballer hanging up his boots at thirty-four is usually 退役 rather than 退休. 退休 specifically means reaching the end of a working career, which in mainland practice is tied to a legal age.
