慰(wèi) - to comfort, to console in Mandarin

慰 (wèi) carries the idea of settling a troubled heart. On its own it belongs to written and literary Chinese; in modern speech it almost always arrives inside a compound.

The three worth learning are 安慰 (ān wèi), to comfort someone or the comfort itself; 欣慰 (xīn wèi), the warm relief a parent or teacher feels when things turn out well; and 慰问 (wèi wèn), the formal visit paid to the sick, the bereaved or the flooded-out, which is what officials do on the evening news.

The trap is trying to use it alone. 我慰你 is not a sentence a Chinese speaker would produce; you want 我安慰你. Treat 慰 as a building block whose meaning you can read off a new compound, not as a verb you can conjugate into a conversation.
