稳定 (wěndìng) describes anything that holds its level rather than swinging about: a job, a wifi signal, a currency, a patient's condition, a relationship. It is one of the highest praise words in Chinese working life, where 稳定的工作 carries a weight that "steady job" in English does not quite reach.
It works as a verb as well as an adjective. 稳定物价 is to stabilise prices, and 稳定下来 is the resultative form meaning to settle down or level off after a period of movement. That 下来 tail is worth copying, because it is how the language marks the arrival at stability rather than the state itself.
The trap is treating it as a synonym for 安全 (ānquán, safe) or 平静 (píngjìng, calm). 稳定 is about the absence of fluctuation, not the absence of danger. A dangerous situation can be perfectly 稳定 if it is not getting any worse, and speakers use it exactly that way in news reports.
